1971 Jeep Commando
Exterior
The paint condition of the vehicle is, what appears to be the original paint. Considering this paint is 53 years of age it is in good condition. Slightly faded. There is some signs of surface rust in the hood hinges, edges of panels, etc (see photos). There is one rock chip in the center, driver side, windshield. There is paint peal on the edges of the hood scoop. The tachometer in the hood scoop does not work. All the lights, windshield wipers, horn, work as they should. Spare tire is present, with no jack or lug wrench. The rear, top of the hard top has a couple small areas bubbling up on the paint where rust is present under the paint. The rear tailgate has some light rust. The bumpers are very straight with good shine. All windows, wing windows, work as they should. The doors open and close with no hang down and close/open easily/smoothly. I could see no dings or dents anywhere. All four tires match and are a older tires. Original hub caps are in place and in good condition.
Interior
I then move to the interior portion of the vehicle. There is light wear to the seats. Normal for mileage. The inner door panels show wear consistent with age and mileage. The interior trim shows normal wear consistent with age and mileage. The carpet shows normal wear consistent with age and mileage. The headliner shows miscellaneous smudge marks from normal use. The dash looks new. the seats are in good condition with no damage. The carpets have no damage, fade, and are in good condition. The door seals are in good condition. All gauges work. The original AM/FM radio and speaker works. The blower works good. Dash panel is in good condition. Some markings in the paint on the inner rear fender wells. All in all pretty clean. No abnormal smells inside.
Road Test
I then took the vehicle for a test drive. The engine started easily, had a slight misfire. Engine performed ok. The 3 speed manual transmission shifted up through the gears fine. When shifting back down you had to drop below about 10 mph to shift for 3rd to 2nd. The clutch was ok. The brakes you had to pump twice prior to using to build pressure in the pedal. The manual steering had allot of play in side to side. The suspension performed ok. I wanted to note on my test drive, about 3 miles into the test drive the right front tire blew out on the inner sidewall due to age. I took this wheel/tire off with the help of the owner and took the wheel/tire to Les Schwab tire center to have a new one installed, while the owner stayed with the vehicle. The owner text me after we installed the new tire stating he had the other three tires replaced with new tires. I did not get this vehicle above 35 mph on the test drive due to the brakes and condition of the tires at the time of the test drive. There is a slight misfire. Have to pump the brake pedal 2-3 times to obtain pressure at the pedal There's a lot of play from side to side.
Mechanical
I inspected the mechanical condition of the vehicle prior to the the test drive. There are oil leaks at the timing chain cover, possible oil pan, front differential cover, transmission, transfer case, and rear differential, pinion gear, seal. These leaks have been there for a long period of time, based on the amount of road grime built up. I was not able to test the vehicles 4wd system due to the tire blow out, condition of the brakes, and tire condition. The coolant hoses are older, but ok. The tire wear on the existing tires is even across the tread. Air filter is clean. Engine oil low and fair condition. Master cylinder is leaking brake fluid from top cover seal. Battery tray has surface rust. There is surface rust on the undercarriage, frame rails, inner fenders, rocker panels on the underside. The leaf springs look new front and rear. The rear shocks look new.
